Tattoo Age Series on Vice TV

Vice's VBS.TV will soon be airing a new series called Tattoo Age focusing on tattooers and their personal histories, and based on the trailer above, it looks like reality programming that is actually based on reality.

Tattoo Age profiles renowned tattooists and has them tell their own stories -- not the sob tales of clients that make up so much of tattoo TV today. It also includes the artists commenting on one another, which I think adds another interesting dimension.

The show premiers July 13th. Here's the line up:

  • Dan Santoro: Pt. 1, July 13; Pt. 2, July 20; Pt. 3, July 27
  • Grime: Trailer, August 3; Pt. 1, August 10; Pt. 2, August 17; Pt. 3, August 24
  • Troy Denning: Trailer, August 31; Pt. 1, Sept. 7; Pt. 2 , Sept. 14; Pt. 3, Sept. 21
  • Mike Rubendall: Trailer, Sept. 28; Pt. 1, Oct. 5; Pt. 2 , Oct. 12; Pt. 3, Oct. 19
  • Freddy Corbin: Trailer, Oct. 26; Pt. 1, Nov. 2; Pt. 2, Nov. 9; Pt. 3, Nov. 16

Canadian Peter Devries Wins Innersection…Again

The Spring round of Innersection has just wrapped up, with Aussie longboard champion, Harley Ingleby, and young Port Macquarie ripper, Matt Banting, making the top 10. However, it was a relatively unknown Canadian, Peter Devries, that took out the top-voted spot to secure a position in Taylor Steele’s second Innersection project. You’d be even more surprised to find out that he won the same round last year.

You may ask how the hell a Canadian surfer got so popular, or when did Canada even pop up on the surf radar? Well, years ago, this place was just a surf-mag novelty trip. Now it’s home to rising international surf stars and packed surf schools. It’s a surf spot.

Part of this is due to the rise of the Internet. And part of it’s due to better wetsuits. Put the two of those together, and get a guy like Peter Devries. Today, Devries qualified with another cold-water classic detailing his surf adventures in the great white north.

I.D.W.P by Edwin Europe

A collection inspired by individuals living their lives in Edwin. Personal life experiences etched into the grain of the fabric in wearing the denim as functional garments, reliable and strong, constructed using premium fabrics and finishes.

The Edwin man is integrated into a tribe of independent free thinkers, his desire to roll amongst the likeminded underpinned by a feeling of kinship and belonging through a common passion for road trips, adventuring into the unknown.

To ascertain the season’s highway aesthetic is to dissect the look and feel of the Edwin motorbike brotherhood ‘Sons of the Summer’ thereby illustrating the highlights of what is the most comprehensive spring summer collusion of fabric, function and form from Edwin for many years.

The collection from the belt loops up is vintage inspired, a conscious juxtaposition of influences from decades gone by and heroes and villains from the world of film and music - Edwin eats, sleeps and breathes culture throughout the design process.

Motorcycle references pepper the collection, partly due to the culture for customisation on the streets of Edwin’s home city - Tokyo and simply down to the feelings one experiences riding a motorcycle with friends. A sense of freedom, and of sharing with others the same need for flight and independence. Customisation of ones own motorcycle parallels breaking in ones own denims, unique in spirit.

The true spirit of Edwin Jeans is created by the person living in them, making everyday count with yesterdays memories etched into the rich indigo fabric, in the knowledge that tomorrow’s good times are still to be created.

The Hypto Krypto by hayden cox

The Hypto Krypto Model is a modern version of the retro fish. It carries the traditional nose and entry rocker but has a little more tail lift and tight round tail to give added performance in the critical areas of the wave. The bottom has a slight single concave to slight vee double through the tail. It still maintains the cruisy retro feel yet allows the board to perform when you want it.

The Blakcat by hayden cox

The Blakcat is my performance shortboard that I shape for team, or any customer wanting a reliable shorty. The rocker is a fast rocker that fits in all areas on the wave. The foil of the board has been designed to create a very responsive feel yet maintain as much forgiveness as possible for a performance shortboard. Generally shaped with a squash tail to give a nice balance of release and hold, you’ll enjoy your Blakcat in all conditions.

Dane Reynolds Joins the Vans Surf Team

We are extremely excited to announce the addition of Dane Reynolds to the Vans Surf Team. Dane is one of the most exciting and unique surfers to date and brings a quiet sort of revolution with him. His approach is completely different to what's been done and his reach touches every facet of surfing. For decades Vans has been home for people choosing their own path and it's a pleasure to be able to uphold that principle to this day and have Dane become a part of it.

The 26 year-old from Ventura, CA has already made his mark on the ASP World Tour with Top Ten final rankings in both 2009 (10th) and 2010 (4th) - just his second and third years on tour, but Dane is much more than a contest surfer. When a surfer is described as straddling the demands of the pro tour while simultaneously establishing himself as a top freesurf talent, perhaps no one reaches such heights in both worlds as the ultra-talented and creative Dane Reynolds.

In addition to Vans, Dane is sponsored by Quiksilver wetsuits and clothing, Channel Islands surfboards and accessories and Ventura Surf Shop.

Vans supports and promotes surfing and surfers through a full line of footwear and apparel, events such as the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the ASP 4-Stars Vans Pier Classic at Huntington Beach and Vans Pro at the East Coast Surfing Championships, the progressive longboard Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitationals and by supporting a talented group of riders on the Vans Surf team including Nathan Fletcher, Joel Tudor, Pat, Dane and Tanner Gudauskas, Alex Knost, John Florence, Andrew Doheny, Dylan Graves, Wade Goodall and Leila Hurst.

ASG - The Dull Blade Lyrics

The Lightning in the sky between us
Maintain some noise of the day
Creedence is strong as horizon
Boulder then cry
Blood soaked landslide

And blue sky
Tortured by darkness till sundays
And your dead kids
I'll give ya something worth fighting for
And open their eyes

Now the blood of the fountain receids us
Beckoned to light in the fame
Mad house of pain without reason
Oh what can defy
Why count the battle cry

And blue sky
Tortured by darkness till sundays
And your dead kids
I'll give ya something worth fighting for
And open their eyes

The light of the compass, the feeling this day
Open their eyes, space for the lives
Severence is calling they know where we lie
Save you we try, welcome to the new life

And blue sky
Tortured by darkness till sundays
And your dead kids
I'll give ya something worth fighting for
And open their eyes

Andy’s Autopsy Results - UPDATE: The Irons family have just released the following statement..

Andy Irons passed away in early November last year and the shocked and saddened surfing community has been patiently awaiting the disclosure of an autopsy report that would reveal the true cause of the surfing legend’s death.

Today the results from the autopsy (that will be made public on the 20th of June) were provided to the New York Times through a publicist from the Iron's family. The article confirms that it was the heart attack related to coronary artery disease that was the primary cause of Andy’s tragic passing alongside the toxins that were found in system.

When Andy was found in his hotel room in Dallas, police discovered prescription drugs such as Alprazolam for anxiety, sleeping tablets, as well as pills containing methadone, a narcotic used by people fighting an opiate addiction. The Toxicology report also show Irons had cocaine and methamphetamines in his system.

Irons was known for his amazing talent in the water and his larger that life behaviour on land. He is dearly missed by the surfing world and will be forever remembered as a three-time world champion, a brother, a son, a husband, and as the father of the young Andy Axel Irons.

Click here for the full NYT article…

------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: The Irons family have just released the following statement...

June 8th, 2011

TO: MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA
FROM: THE FAMILY OF ANDY IRONS

RE: OFFICIAL IRONS FAMILY STATEMENT REGARDING ANDY IRONS AUTOPSY AND TOXICOLOGY REPORT

We have received the final autopsy and toxicology report filed in connection with Andy’s death on November 2nd, 2010, from the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office in Forth Worth, TX.

The family apologizes for the delay in the release of this information. The injunction filed last December was to allow Andy’s widow, Lyndie, who was then eight months pregnant with Andy’s son, Andy Axel Irons, to give birth in peace. Please understand that this decision meant that the family did not learn the cause of Andy’s death until May 20th, and only after a second delay was requested by an attorney in Dallas, without the family’s knowledge or consent, to provide time for the 13-page toxicology report to be interpreted by two independent forensic experts — a process that took several weeks, but also enabled the family to fully come to terms with the unexpected root cause of Andy’s death.

The autopsy concludes that Andy died a natural death from a sudden cardiac arrest due to a severe blockage of a main artery of the heart. Dr. Vincent Di Maio, a prominent forensic pathologist in San Antonio, TX, who has consulted on many high-profile cases, was asked to review and explain the autopsy results to the family. He states: “This is a very straightforward case. Mr. Irons died of a heart attack due to focal severe coronary atherosclerosis, i.e., ‘hardening of the arteries.’ He had an atherosclerotic plaque producing 70%-80% narrowing of his anterior descending coronary artery. This is very severe narrowing. A plaque of this severity, located in the anterior descending coronary artery, is commonly associated with sudden death.”

Dr. Di Maio continues: “The only unusual aspect of the case is Mr. Irons’ age, 32 years old. Deaths due to coronary atherosclerosis usually begin to appear in the late 40’s. Individuals such as Mr. Irons have a genetic predisposition to early development of coronary artery disease. In about 25% of the population, the first symptom of severe coronary atherosclerosis is sudden death.” He concludes: “There were no other factors contributing to the death.”

Andy had a grandmother, 77, and a grand-uncle, 51, both on his father’s side, who died of congestive heart failure. Looking back, Lyndie recalls that Andy complained of chest pains and occasional intense heartburn for the first time last year, and also recalls a holistic health practitioner, whom he sought out in Australia for vitamin therapy, offhandedly mentioning he “had the heart of a 50-year-old.” In addition, Andy contracted Typhoid Fever five years ago, which can result in damage to the heart muscle. But Andy shrugged it all off and led no one to believe he was in ill health.

The official autopsy report, prepared by Tarrant County Chief Medical Examiner Nizam Peerwani, MD, lists a second cause of death as “acute mixed drug ingestion.” On this point, Dr. Peerwani and Dr. Di Maio diverge. In a letter sent to Arch McColl, a Dallas-based attorney acting on behalf of the family, Dr. Di Maio questioned Dr. Peerwani’s decision to list the finding “Acute Mixed Drug Ingestion” under “Cause of Death” because he believes “it was not the cause of death and did not contribute to the death. The Manner of Death is in fact labeled Natural.” Dr. Di Maio goes on to say that the drugs cited, Alprazolam (Xanax) and methadone (an analgesic drug commonly used in the treatment of chronic pain), are in “therapeutic levels” and notes that benzoylecgonine is an “inactive metabolite,” which Gary H. Wimbish Ph.D., DABFT, a forensic toxicologist consulted by the family, has explained is a breakdown product of cocaine. Wimbish states that the benzoylecgonine present in Andy’s blood at 50 ng/ml “is consistent with the use of cocaine at about 30 hours prior to his death.” In addition, Wimbish agrees with Dr. Di Maio that that the amount of Alprazolam present in Andy’s blood “is consistent with a common therapeutic regimen.”

Dr. Peerwani’s report also cites the presence of a trace amount of methamphetamine. Lyndie insists Andy was not a methamphetamine user, so it is likely the substance was present in the cocaine he ingested. But again, Dr. Di Maio believes that none of these drugs was the cause of, or contributed to, Andy’s death.

As we are not doctors, we have no choice but to accept that two respected pathologists have come to different conclusions about a secondary contributing cause of death. However, the family would like to address the findings of prescription and non-prescription drugs in Andy’s system. Andy was prescribed Xanax and Zolpidem (Ambien) to treat anxiety and occasional insomnia – a result of a bipolar disorder diagnosed by his family doctor at age 18. This is when Andy first began experiencing episodes of manic highs and depressive lows. The family believes Andy was in some denial about the severity of his chemical imbalance and tended to blame his mood swings on himself and his own weaknesses, choosing to self-medicate with recreational drugs. Members of his family, close friends, and an industry sponsor intervened over the years to help Andy get clean, but the effort to find balance in his life was certainly complicated by his chemical makeup.

Finally, as has been reported, Andy was suffering from severe flu-like symptoms while in Puerto Rico to compete in the Rip Curl Pro Search leg of the ASP World Tour just days prior to his death. Andy was unable to leave his bed and for the first time in his Pro career, withdrew from a contest. He was put on an intravenous drip for hydration and strongly advised to seek further medical treatment. Against doctor’s advice, Andy left for Kauai, Hawaii, to be with his wife, telling the doctor: “I just wanna go home.”

Though Andy’s illness is not addressed in the autopsy (which only tested for and ruled out suspected Dengue Fever), Andy’s weakened condition clearly contributed to the tragic circumstances of his death, adding more stress to an already gravely compromised heart.

Having defied the odds so many times before, Andy may have felt that getting on a plane while dehydrated and wracked with fever, and choosing to meet up with acquaintances during a short layover in Miami, was nothing out of the ordinary. His strong-willed personality was part of what made him such a formidable surfer and champion. Like others who face down extreme danger, Andy seemed to feel bulletproof — as if nothing could take him down. But traveling while sick and suffering from an undiagnosed heart condition, was more than even Andy could overcome.

We are hoping that people will remember Andy for his very full life, which included his intense passion for surfing and the ocean, his astonishing achievements as a world-class athlete, and his devotion to the family and friends who love him dearly and miss him every day. Receiving the disturbing news about the cause of death brings back the shock and tremendous grief we first felt upon receiving word that Andy had passed.

We would like to thank everyone for their condolences and support over the last seven months. There was so much positivity in Andy’s professional and personal life, not least of which was how hard he worked to overcome his challenges. For this we remain forever proud of him.

This continues to be a very difficult time for our family and we appreciate the media's respect for our privacy. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support and will not have any immediate comment beyond this statement.

For those who wish to honor Andy’s memory, we ask that they consider making a donation to the Surfrider Foundation, a charity Andy supported, at www.surfrider.org.

2011 Street League Kansas City - Transworld SKATEboarding

Street League made it’s way to Malto-ville for its second stop of the year, and after Friday’s qualifiers, Nyjah Huston got the top spot going into the finals with Chris Cole qualifying second and Sean Malto third.

QUALIFIER RESULTS:
1. Nyjah Huston
2. Chris Cole
3. Sean Malto
4. Torey Pudwill
5. Shane O’Neill
6. Chaz Ortiz
7. Paul Rodriguez
8. Mikey Taylor
9. Billy Marks

Filmed and edited by Ryan Lovell, marquee photo by Aaron Smith

That’s two Street League stops down, and two wins for Nyjah. After taking first in Seattle, Nyjah comes through again in Kansas City beating out Chris Cole, Chaz Ortiz and KC local Sean Malto to stuff another $150,000 check into his pocket. He’s still only sixteen and has $300,000 more in the bank this year just off of Street League alone. Could be why he’s driving a brand new Benz? The dude really is too good. Ryan Sheckler placed fifth, but also went home with the Monster Best Trick award after getting the highest scoring trick of the day, a 9.4, with his Cab flip in the Big Section. You’ll see it in soon enough. It’s pretty much bonkers. Street League has the full results and recap, and we’ve got the video from the finals below. Enjoy.

FINAL RESULTS:
1. Nyjah Huston
2. Chris Cole
3. Chaz Ortiz
4. Sean Malto
5. Ryan Sheckler

Surfing Prodigy Jack Robinson

Surfing Prodigy Jack Robinson from quiksilverAus on Vimeo.

Quiksilver.com.au is happy to announce that West Australian super grommet, Jack Robinson has re-signed to the team for another three years.

Regarded by many as the best young surfer on the planet, the snowy-haired Margaret River prodigy has redefined what a 13-year-old with a surfboard is capable of. His surfing at places like Grajagan, the North Shore of Oahu and Snapper Rocks has dented the egos of surfers twice his size and twice his age… while captivating them at the same time.

“I’m really stoked to be with Quiksilver,” says Jack. “I’ve had such a great time travelling to all these amazing places and surfing with all their best surfers. I’m really lucky, I reckon. Now I can do a lot more surfing with the guys I look up to and learn a few things from them while I do it.”

“I don’t think anyone in the world loves to surf more than Jack and we’re over the moon that he’s chosen to surf with us,” says Quiksilver Australia marketing manager and former World Tour surfer, Troy Brooks. “I could sit there for hours and watch him catch waves. For a kid so young he’s got such a mature style, and I can’t wait to see his surfing really blossom as he gets older. But it’s more than just his surfing, he’s a fun, well-grounded country kid who is really enjoying what he’s doing.”

“Jack’s just super stoked on surfing,” says Jack’s manager and fellow West Aussie surfer, Matt Syms from Octagon Sports Management. “He’s grateful for the opportunities he gets, he’s polite, and the little fella is becoming quite worldly for his age. Re-signing with Quiksilver was a natural next step for Jack. Quik’s global infrastructure and support systems are second to none, and the company’s commitment to ensuring they have the best athletes, the best events and the best products in the surf space shows where the brand is heading.”

Jack recently returned from the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast, where in between watching and surfing with his heroes like Kelly Slater, he won the final of The King of the Groms against the best under-16 surfers from around Australia. The win earns Jack a ticket to France later this year where he will surf against the world’s best under-16 surfers in the international King of the Groms final at Hossegor.

“Of course, it is very early days in Jack’s career,” says Syms, “but if he stays as interested as he is now, there are no limits for him. I’ve already seen him pull off manoeuvres in contests and freesurfs that a lot of the World Tour competitors can’t do. Jack’s style and attention to detail is so far ahead of his years it’s incredible. His ability to visualise manoeuvres and then go out and perform them with style is a very special gift.”

For now though, Jack is busy, “just going surfing. I’m not thinking too much right now about the future and where I’d like to go with my surfing. I just want to catch some waves and have some fun and whatever happens, happens.”
